A Luau Party is a Perfect Sweet 16 Party Idea
A Luau is a feast in Hawaii. The elements include a roasted pig, a traditional food called poi, Hawaiian music and hula dancers. If you do not have a pool, and do not leave near water, you can host the party in your back yard. On the party invitations, tell the guests to dress for the occasion by wearing flowered shirts, flip flops, sundresses, shorts, etc. During the party, be sure to play some Hawaiian music on a small sound system and include colorful flowers, like Hibiscus, to set the mood. Set out plenty of citronella for the pesky mosquitoes that might try to crash your party.
If your party is in the evening, turn off the outdoor lights and set up string lights, tiki torches and candles. String lights that feature parrots, beach balls, surf boards and more can be found at local party supply stores and online. Check out Oriental Trading Company for starters. If you have a pool, add floating candles. An inexpensive way to really set the mood is to string white Christmas lites along the fence, in trees and in bushes.
Use tropical-themed table coverings on the serving tables. Place silk flowers and other silk greenery on the serving table, around the serving dishes. If you have some sea shells, place these on the serviing tables as well, to round out the theme. Use whole pineapples and coconuts to hold down the table cloths or nets. Hula skirts make fantastic party decorations. Hang them on the serving tables to add extra tropical flair! Do you have a surfboard? If not, maybe you can borrow one from a friend of neighbor. It will look great, leaned up against a fence or a wall.
