When most people think of Edinburgh, they usually think of the Edinburgh Festival and the city’s summertime offerings; and it’s certainly no surprise as to why. The events that collectively make up the Edinburgh Festival make for the biggest arts festival in the world, and the city none other than transforms during the month of August each year. But that’s not to say Scotland’s capital is lacking exceptional events throughout the rest of the year.
Edinburgh is a true city of art and culture, with something exciting on offer at any given time of the year. Wintertime is an ideal example of this, as it’s a time of year that’s considerably removed from the festival. Yet wintertime boasts countless events and activities that have won the city unparalleled acclaim, and which continue to draw hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
The most prominent of these events is the Hogmanay street party. Officially organised since 1993, the Edinburgh street party now draws 100,000 people each December to ring in the New Year. With locals and visitors from far and wide partaking in the party – which consists of concerts, dances, a firework display and more – the street festival is regarded by many as one of the best New Year’s celebrations in the world.
Another well-known wintertime event in Edinburgh is the German Christmas market. Set up each year on Princes Street – next to the Royal Scottish Academy and the National Gallery of Scotland – the German Christmas market consists of a magical display of stalls packed with hand-made toys, gifts and decorations. The market also offers a delicious array of foods, drinks, and sweets – like hot Gluhwein (mulled wine) and handmade funnel cakes smothered with chocolate sauce.
Of course, the city also hosts countless cultural events throughout the winter months, ranging from museum and art gallery exhibits, to Scottish heritage events. While some events show up annually in the city, many are one-off events – so it’s worth consulting a city event calendar before planning your trip, just in case you want to plan around a specific event.
So, while it’s no surprise that a mere mention of Edinburgh conjures up images of the Edinburgh Festival, the city has much to offer at other times of the year. In fact there’s always plenty to see no matter what time of the year you come to visit. Of course everyone from the staff in and Edinburgh hotels to taxi drivers across the city will be able to recommend the best landmarks in the cities, from Arthur’s Seat to the Grassmarket, so finding the best places to visit is never a problem.
