One of the typical Murcian coastal towns of the Costa Calida, Spain, Santiago de la Ribera is situated on the popular Mar Menor (Lesser Sea), an area of warm, shallow waters and safe, sandy beaches.
Originally growing up around a tiny hermitage constructed in the late 19th century, Santiago de la Ribera developed as a fishing village and a summer residence for rich businessmen from the nearby city of Murcia.
Still popular as a holiday resort with the people of Murcia and Cartagena, Santiago de la Ribera today has a more international feel, attracting visitors from all over Northern Europe, who come to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and the perfect bathing conditions of the Mar Menor, the waters here being at least five degrees warmer than the surrounding Mediterranean Sea.
Santiago de la Ribera has an attractive palm-lined promenade, popular for evening and weekend ‘paseos’, this runs behind its narrow, sandy beach, which is lapped by the warm, salty waters of the Mar Menor. Go past the lively Club Nautico and you will find an area called the ‘City of Air’, this is where pilots and their families lived while training at the nearby air-base.
You could time your visit to the town to coincide with one of its many fiestas, the atmosphere is sure to be electric and always very friendly. July is a good time, as during this month, there are a couple of fiestas, the large Festival of Santiago, and also the fiesta in honour of the Virgen del Carmen.
Santiago de la Ribera is just a few minutes drive from Murcia airport and can be reached via the N-332 coast road.
This article was written by Steve Locke who lives a little to the north of the town, on the Orihuela Costa. Steve writes for his local newspaper and works on his successful website, which has lots of information on this area. You can read more about Santiago de la Ribera here: http://www.needahandspanishproperties.com/santiago-de-la-ribera.html and learn lots about the city of Murcia here: http://www.needahandspanishproperties.com/murcia.html, Steve’s website also covers most other areas of Spain.
