Moving to VA Beach city, a good idea?
I live in northern WV. Im 17 years old and I’ve been thinking about college alot. I’ve always wanted to live on a beach, or near a beach since I was about 9. However I don’t want to move too far from my friends and family. I want to be within driving distance from them. I’ve been to Ocean City, Maryland and it was fun for a vacation but I would never want to live there. So I’ve been thinking about Virginia Beach City. There is this school I found called Tidewater Community College and its 9 miles from the beach. I’ve never been to Virginia Beach but my mom is planning on taking me down there to tour the school this summer. I won’t exactly have much money untill I’m out of school so I will have to be staying in a 300-500/month apartment. So anyone who knows anything about VA Beach please inform me about things like cost of living, crime rates, employment rates, what the beach is like, etc etc etc.
It will be greatly appreciated.
Virginia Beach is part of a large metro area, about 1.6 million total. It is fairly spread out. Long distances between places is common.
The cost of living depends hugely on where you want to live. If it’s a beach-front apartment you want, 300-500 a month won’t cut it.
Crime is low in Virginia Beach, relatively speaking, although some areas are definitely better than others. Chesapeake and VA Beach are low; Norfolk and Portsmouth are higher.
Cost of living, generally, is OK for a big city, but probably a lot higher than what you are used to in WV.
As for employment, this is a very low unemployment area, but I am sure you can find something, especially waiting tables or something.
The beach is gorgeous, but this ain’t Florida. The really nice weather doesn’t show up until April but the ocean is still too cold then. Winter weather doesn’t happen much here but winter is mild (generally daytime is 45-60 from Dec to Feb) and frosts do occur, but some palm trees can survive here.
During the warmest months (May-Sept) it is very hot (90-100) and humid. The beach is large and beautiful.
Public transportation is terrible and unless you have a car you had better live, work and go to school all really close together.
