Where to visit in Savannah, GA?
My fiance and I are planning on taking a trip to Savannah. What are the must-see places? And where is a safe and decent place to stay that is walking-distance to all the good spots? We have heard about the ghost tours they have, and we thought that’d be fun, as well as going to Paula Dean’s restaurant. What else is there?
Go to the Visitor’s Center and see the movie and the museum there. One of the benches from “Forrest Gump” is on display and so is the statue featured on the front cover of the book, “Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil” (if you haven’t read it, do so before you go).
Take the Old Town Trolley Tour; they offer day tours and Ghost tours. (Make reservations for the ghost tour when you buy the day tour, as they sell out quickly!!!)
It’s a great way to see the city and relax. Parking spaces are not always easy to find near the tourist spots. The trolley/bus will stop near any place you want to see and they run about every 30 minutes, so you can re-board and move on to something else. The drivers are well versed in the history of Savannah, so if you missed something on one bus the next driver will fill in the blanks.
Savannah is the most haunted city in America, so almost every home has a ghost story.
River Front/River Street and Factor’s Walk: There are lots of great places to shop and eat. If you can’t find a place on the street level, try one of the smaller bars/eateries that are upstairs. Parking is free on the week-ends, so don’t put any money in the meter.
Street entertainers are on the public areas between River Street and the river, so be sure to spend some time there for some talented acts.
Paula Dean’s always has a line of people waiting, so get there early!!
Must-See-Places:
The birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of America). A great ghost story there!!
Mercer House, the setting for the book “Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil”.
Each town square is unique and has a story.
Ships of the Sea Museum, about a third of a mile from the Visitors Center.
Lodging includes Marriot, Quality Inn, DoubleTree, Master’s Inn, Comfort Suites, Thunderbird, Days Inn Airport, Garden Hotel and the Inn at Ellis Square.
Have fun and don’t forget your camera!!!
