What things do you need to start to DJ?
I want to do it for fun so i do not want to spend a lot of money, but yet i would like to have a good time! ![]()
Thank you for your comments
you need to figure out what you actually want to do. Do you want to play music at private parties, or at clubs, or at car shows, or for a radio station, or for school dances? That single answer makes a big difference in what you need to start. Let me make a few assumptions.
Assuming you just want to play music, which means no interractive dance numbers, no real MC stuff, not a lot of announcing, and no party favors or lighting systems. Asuuming that you want private parties, which means that you’d be a mobile DJ. Assuming that you want to play music as it is which means no editing, producing, or scratching. Lastly, assume that you will be playing for no more than 150 people at a time. Lastly, assuming that you want to go as cheap as possible.
I suggest a PA package system. You can get one from phonic for less than $300. It’ll can come with two speakers, a mixer, and a microphone. The only other equipment you’ll need (besides music) is something to play the music.
If you have a computer that can handle a DJ program, then I suggest you buy one of those. Most programs will let you split the headphone output so that one channel (Left or Right) is for cueing music and the other is for the main mix. That shouldn’t run you more than $100. If you don’t have a computer, then I suggest another all-in-one package that uses CDs. That might run you $400 for something like a Numark Fusion setup.
Other than that, there are some incidentals to be aware of. Extention cords, headphones, audio wires, etc. You also might want to buy your own table and a tablecloth.
All this can cost less than $1000 out of pocket.
In all fairness, I should mention that I am a DJ and my standard speakers cost over $2000 each. My headphones cost around $300. One fo my DJ computer programs costs over $600. One of my CD players costs around $700. My point here is simply that following my suggestions will get you all the parts needed to be able to DJ but that doesn’t mean the parts are good. However, they will be good enough to play some small gigs, make your initial investment back, and start to get money to by better equipment.
