fun statistics questions
Here is a fun statistics question that I’ve come up with three answers for:?

If the mean student height is 64, with a SD (standard deviation) of 5, approx. what is the probability of randomly selecting a student whose height is more than 70 inches?

Hi,

On the TI83, go to [2nd][VARS] to DISTR and choose the command below and fill in your numbers. The upper bound can be anything very large, many standard deviations above.

normalcdf(lower bound, upper bound, mean, standard deviation)

normalcdf(70,500,64,5) = .1151

11.51% of the heights are more than 70″ <==ANSWER

This can also be done using a standard normal distribution chart.

(70 - 64)/5 = 1.2 = z

Look at a standard normal distribution chart to find out what percent of scores fall below a z score of 1.2. This is .8849
. That means that 1 - .8849 = .1151 or 11.51% of the students will be greater than 70" tall.

This gives the same answer both ways!!

I hope that helps!! :-)
