fun seattle

There aren’t a lot of places in the United States where you can watch whales, but Seattle is a great place where it can be done. This is definitely an activity that they whole family can enjoy and one that isn’t easily forgotten.

So what makes whale watching so fun?

First of all, being on the water is an experience like no other. I personally love any activity that has to do with the ocean and having the opportunity to come in contact with some of the most beautiful animals on the planet makes the experience all the more special. You can really feel a connection with them and it is very awe-inspiring to get so close to them.

Seeing the whales in their natural habitat is an experience unlike any other and for me, it was unbelievable in feeling that I was part of something more than just myself and that these animals were an intrinsic part of that.

Ways to see the whales

There are multiple ways that you can see the whales when visiting Seattle. The most obvious method is to take a whale-watching tour and ride on one of the many whale-watching boats. These are nice because a lot of these types of companies offer guarantees, meaning that they guarantee that you’ll see a whale on your trip. You should be sure to check with the individual company before you sign up.

These company tours are also nice because some of them offer an education-type tour where you get an idea of the habitat of the whales, and you can find out some little-known facts about the whales.

If you’re more interested in getting out in the open water on your own, there is always kayaking. Many people use kayaks to get up and close with these massive creatures (but keep in mind that these are wild animals and that by law you’re supposed to stay at least 100 feet away from them. (Not that you’d want to get any closer!)

Where to whale watch

The great thing about visiting Seattle is that you won’t have to travel too far to have this awesome experience. Most of the whale-watching excursions take place out near the San Juan islands which are only about an hour and a half from downtown. Not only are these islands great for whale watching, but they make excellent destination spots in their own right.

So next time you’re in Seattle, check out some of the whale-watching opportunities. You (and your family) will go away from the experience a different person.
