Motivating employees to do well at their jobs can be a tricky task, and sometimes you may find it easier to call in external help in the form of a motivational speaker. This can be a benefit to any company, but it can of course be costly too.
It is always good to be able to employ some simple techniques of your own though, as these can be highly effective and save regular expenses that will be outgoings to somebody outside of your company. Instead, if you have the money to spare, then cash can be a great incentive for people and ensure they know they are being appreciated within their role. Try giving sales staff pay plus commission, so they get extra whenever they make a sale. This will help drive the number of sales up for them, as they will see something clearly in it for them. It is harsh but true, but people will work harder at the prospect of a reward.
You could, similarly, give quantity sales bonuses. If somebody sells x amount of the product you deal with, then give them a bonus. This will help inspire them to find ways to push for a higher volume of sales in one go. It will not always be possible, which will of course be good as otherwise you would be paying out a lot, but it is a nice incentive if anybody does manage to make that extra good sale.
The final monetary motivational technique is just the plain old bonus. Christmas bonuses are common, but you could set a target on them. If the team manages to achieve a certain set of goals in the 3 months proceeding Christmas, then everyone will get a ten percent bonus. This is also a way to help motivate good team work, as people will need to co-operate to earn the reward for themselves and everyone else. You could repeat bonuses at other times of year as well if you find the extra boost in your workers pays off enough for you to do so.
Competition helps people thrive at their jobs, so try some in house competitions for that little bit of extra working spirit in the office. Having an employee of the month, or sales leader boards will help people keep track of their progress. Rewards such as the title of employee of the month, will also make people feel appreciated, and thus more willing to continue putting in effort. For a leader board scenario you may be able to offer a small reward to the highest performer, but this is in your discretion.
Apart from reward or incentive based methods, you can motivate people using two more known techniques. People are likely to get bored doing repetitive work, so if this could be a problem in your company then try job rotation. A set of people can rotate their roles so they have varying different things to do each week, thus preventing boredom setting in and a drop in performance. Training may be necessary to enforce this.
Finally, team work is proven to be motivational too. Employees who get on well will achieve better results as a group. Take regular opportunities to bond, and make this a part of training too, with group activities used to learn new skills.
These are just a few easy to implement ways to motivate employees, and should see morale and teamwork soar, as well as the profits for your company.
If you are struggling to motivate your employees, then it may be worthwhile to hire a motivational speaker in-house or to take your employees to see a corporate motivational speaking seminar.
