Considering MySpace’s reputation for cheese and sleaze, some may think that the words ‘professional’ and ‘myspace layouts’ do not even belong on the same page let alone in the same sentence. But I assure you that you can have a professionally designed MySpace page and on top of that you won’t have to pay eleventy billion dollars for it either. In fact, all this can be accomplished using a free premade layout. What will really define the aesthetic appeal of your profile is not so much the background or the layout you choose (although these will make a difference) but rather what you actually put on your MySpace page.
Someone recently posted to my blog that they regretted having to ruin an otherwise professional look on their MySpace page by filling up their modules with a bunch of ‘useless crap’. Well people, the plain fact of the matter is, you don’t have to do this. If you just recently signed up with MySpace because you are considering using it as a marketing tool, don’t shoot yourself in the foot by taking a monkey-see, monkey-do approach to creating your MySpace profile.
The going trend on MySpace has leaned heavily on the side of filling up pages with a morass of videos, slide shows and cheesy gag images (not too mention the glitter). This is all fine and dandy but you have to keep in mind that most MySpacers do this simply because it’s fun. Ultimately they don’t give a wit about any of the analytics that help internet marketers measure the success of any one particular web page. Traffic, click through rates and conversion rates are meaningless to them. To many MySpacers, it’s all about what happened at the frat party on the weekend or where everybody is going after work on Friday and that’s it, that’s all.
You and your professional MySpace layout, on the other hand, are out for something completely different. If you would like to successfully use your MySpace page as a means to promote yourself and/or your profession, the worst thing you can do is take an unprofessional approach simply to try to fit in with other MySpace users. What you want to do instead is create a profile that is clean, simple, inviting and gets your message across in a clear and concise manner. Period. That means no flash, no glitter, no toilet humour and only using a video (note singular, i.e., a video not ten videos) if it really contributes to your web promotion agenda.
For a few years now, web design has been moving away from the gaudy, popping-and-fizzing, loud-colored (or just plain loud) pages of the late 90′s which were typically stuffed to the brims with animated GIFs, cute icons and slow-loading background sounds. Unfortunately this can easily describe the lion’s share of MySpace profiles out there which would indicate that either a lot of MySpace users are stuck in the past (unlikely) or simply know very little about good web design (much more likely).
Nowadays, good web design is trending towards flat, plain, simple, pastel colored web pages that load quickly and have plenty of whitespace (not necessarily white but rather space between chunks of text and other content). It seems that many are starting to discover that plain and simple simply works better than bombastic and overblown.
Hence, the bottom line is whether you want to stand out from the crowd or just fit in with the rest will really define whether you have a truly professional MySpace layout or just a waste of space.
