Purchasing the right sail boat is paramount to having the most enjoyment on your vessel, and if you pick the wrong boat, it can lead to nothing but anxiety. Perhaps, it is for this reason that I’d like to recommend a very good book to you;
“Choosing Your Boat – a Practical Guide to Selecting a Sail Boat That Fits Both Your Pocket Book and Sailing Needs,” by John Roberts and Maria Mann, 1986.
“Why would anyone want a systematic approach to buying a sailboat between 25 and 45 foot in length?” asks the authors and they give you the answer.
Even if the sailor was only going to cruise it rather than race it, there are still a lot things to know about buying a sailboat. And yes the authors admit that buying a Sail Boat is an emotional decision. There are different types of uses such as; ocean crossing, weekend sailing, coastal cruising, or even a sailboat you might live on.
Maria one of the authors is a quality control manager at a boat manufacturing company (or at least she was when she wrote this book) and she has sailed over 50,000 miles. John Roberts is also the author of; “Fiberglass Boats: Construction, Repair, and Maintenance,” another book that I highly recommend and one that is also in my personal library as well.
In “Choosing Your Boat,” the book takes the reader through the process of understanding both the dreams and realities of owning and buying a sail boat. He helps you appraise your needs, and suggests where to look, and how to go about checking out boats at boat show.
He gives you tips on how you can check out a boat in about 15 minutes including checking the fiberglass integrity, and the solidness of the vessel. There is also a chapter on boat designs; and why it makes sense to visit the factory when making your choice. If you go through a yacht broker the book suggests ways to make the broker work for you.
In the book they suggest how to find distress sales, knowing about boat detailing, and where to find good Boat reviews such as; Yachting Magazine, Motoring and Sailing Magazine, Sailing Magazine, and Cruising World, for instance. He explains how many used yacht brokers are quite knowledgeable and how to pick their brain. All in all, I would say this is probably one of the best books you could ever buy to help you get your dream sailing vessel. I hope you will please consider all this.
