What are some good words with juicy histories from the Oxford English Dictionary?
I’m writing a research paper on “the history of a word”. Some interesting words I’ve considered are character, fantastic, weird, barbarian, crib, text and google (now verbs).
These are good but I’d like one that I can have fun with and also show my History of English prof something he’ll find intriguing. I’m interested in etymology, morphology, socio-linguistic variability etc. and how the spelling and meanings have changed throughout history as referenced in different texts and historical, social, and linguistic contexts.
I’d like to be able to research or speculate on any factors for the word’s variation and changes in spelling, pronunciation or meaning, Also, we’re studying Old English and Middle English origins and I myself am fascinated with anything that has Ancient Greek heritage. .
My main source will be the Oxford English Dictionary, so it does have to be in the OED. Any word suggestions?
