Are you looking to plan a party for a special kid for his or her birthday or maybe some other special occasion? If you are, you need decorations, games and invitations – but one of the biggest considerations is the food! Do you want fun or healthy treats – have it at your house or a picnic in the park? Or maybe even get it catered?
These are all questions you have to think about when it comes to kids party food. Depending on the time of day, you will probably serve snacks. I like the typical birthday cake and maybe some candy treats. You may go all out and serve some great burgers and a gummy worm dessert that your kids help you make! There are so many cute kid recipes online for “kids party food” … look around and be creative with your cooking if that is your thing. Put faces on cupcakes or have an Oreo worm cake. Kids love food that is colorful and tastes good too! It is even more fun if you can have them participate in the cooking or decorating of it. You might use sugar cookies or ice cream sundaes.
If you want to be a little healthier, there are ways to do that without sacrificing taste. You can do Pigs-In-A-Blanket with turkey or veggie hot dogs, and use wheat breadsticks for the “blanket”. Or you can do fruit skewers and yogurt dip (yum!) with colorful toothpicks (plastic is best). Pretzel-coated chicken strips are delicious and much less fattening than fried strips, and pair them with veggie “flowers” made out of carrot sticks, celery sticks, cherry tomatoes, and raw broccoli and cauliflower. Set them around low-fat ranch dressing and you have some happy eaters!
What is your child’s favorite birthday cake? You can either buy one at the local bakery or decorate it yourself, and even have your child supervise. Let them pick out the decorations and candles at the grocery store, as well as the cake and frosting flavors. Maybe they want an unusual cake like Red Velvet or Rainbow – use food coloring and let them be creative. You can even have a birthday pie – I liked pumpkin pie when I was little so I remember blowing candles out on that! You can also buy plastic and disposable birthday ware for that special theme they want – like Sponge Bob or Hannah Montana. You will have fewer dishes to wash and they have more fun!
If you know there will be kids that have peanut allergies, make sure you have desserts and snacks that are peanut-free and made separately on a different table, near the other desserts and snacks, so those kids don’t feel left out. Prepare as much as you can in advance so you are not frazzled on the day of the party!
The biggest thing with kid’s party food is that you make it easy for you and fun for the kids – and that it tastes good! Healthy options make it even better for the kids, and they will not be full of sugar. Enjoy your party and your fun colorful desserts!
