As a parent, what are the things that you can do to give your child enough opportunities to grow mentally? Kids learn best in an atmosphere of freedom and in an environment prepared to help them learn. It’s very important for your kid to feel free to move about, follow what interests him, and work freely in an activity that he chooses. Although giving him a degree of freedom is important, it must be coupled with self-discipline. Proper limits must also be imposed.
Here are some fun activities that encourage learning, and help educate your kids’ senses at the same time:
- For a fun game that will help develop motor skills, draw a wide circle on the floor with a chalk. First, let your child walk on the circle, placing one foot directly in front of the other until he can balance well. Then, encourage him to try doing the same thing holding a glass of water without spilling it as he walks, or a bell without letting it ring.
- Put at least a dozen objects inside a paper bag. Tie the tops just tightly enough to let your kid slip his hand in. Ask him to identify each object by touch before he takes it out.
- To stimulate your child’s sense of touch, cut out matching pieces of cloth of several textures (chiffon, silk, corduroy, velvet, etc.) As soon as your kid can match them easily by touch and sight, blindfold him and let him do the same process by touch alone.
- For a fun game that encourages visual perception, get two sets of yarn in a wide range of colors. Mount each one on a cardboard for a color-matching game. If your child is two years old, you can start by matching just the primary colors. Eventually, add a variety of shades to make the game more challenging. As your child’s skill develops, you can have him arrange the colors in order from lightest to darkest and vice-versa. You can also use a different version of the game. Try showing your kid one shade, then send him to the next room to choose the matching shade from a pile of colors.
