Margate Museum, which is now closed, provided a look at the heritage of the town by the sea.

The roof and walls are covered in over 4 million shells at the Shell Grotto. It was discovered in 1835. The age of the building is not known, nor is its origin.

In the Last Orders written by Graham Swift, Margate is featured as a location. Jack Dodds, a character in the novel, asks that his remains be placed at Margate. It is the story of a drive that brings a rush of memories on the trip. Margate is also used in the writing A Fete Worse Than Death by Iain Aitch, was born in Margate.

T. S. Eliot sought refuge after a breakdown in this area and wrote a poem about it in 1921 titled The Waste Land Part III-The Fire Sermon.
