Dolgellau is a small welsh market town in the Gwynedd. It is situated on A470 lying on the River Winion about ten miles from the port of Barmouth. Located at the foot of Cader Idris mountain range it is an ideal starting point for touring Snowdonia. The main infustry is tourism but agriculture also playts a part.
The town has grown over the years from a serf village which was founded in 12th century. Although a few Roman coins were found on the site of the present St. Mary’s Church and despite the presence of three hill forts of uncertain origin there is no evidence to suggest it was ever settled by the Romans who conquered the area in 77 AD.
The wool industry initially played a significant role in the development of the town followed by the printing industry. A mini gold rush in the 19th century also contributed to the growth of the town. Clogau St. David’s Gold Mine supplied gold for many royal weddings. The tradition was started by the late Queen Mother and has continued to the recent times with the wedding of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall (2005).
Sometime in the 12th century a church was built which was rebuilt in 1716. George Fox the Founder of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) visited the town in 1657. Many townfolks converted to Quakerism which led to their persecution and some of them migrated to Pennsylvania where they settled in the counties of Philadelphia, Bucks, and Chester.
The name of the town, Dolgellau, in Welsh means Meadow of Groves but before then it has been known by different names. In 1253 it was known as Dolkelew and in 1285 “Dolgethley” (1285). Similarly the name was not always spelt as it is today and shortly before the railway station was closed the signs displayed there were Dolgelly, Dolgelley and Dolgella.
Dolgellau hosts an annual rock festivel known as Sesiwn Fawr Dolgellau (the ‘mighty session’). It was first held in 1992 as a free festival but became a ticketed one in 2002. Every summer, Dolgellau is also host to the Gwyl Cefn Gwlad (“Festival of the Countryside”), a mix of agricultural show and fête. Perhaps Dolgellau Cricket Club created in 1869 is the oldest club in Wales.
