family fun washington
I am going to Washington D.C. with my family this spring break, what are some fun things to do?

I know we will be going to the smithsonian and everything, but anything fun?

Ok, I was born there, lived there, and still live close enough to visit whenever I want. I love DC!

You ABSOLUTELY have to go to the Smithsonians.
-Couple things: National Gallery of Art may not be so much fun for the kids, BUT it does have the best cafe/food options of all the museums on the mall. The Museum of American History is under construction and won’t be open, but a gallery/expose is in the Air and Space Museum (and it’s a very good little gallery, but I love american pop culture and little history tidbits, so I will let you decide.)

You might want to do 2-3 museums a day, and decide which ones you really want to go to, because there are a LOT!

Should the sun decide to shine, the National Zoo is SPECTACULAR! I LOVE it! Even though I am in my teens now, it is still as exciting as when I was a little kid! So anyone will love it. In fact, go on a day when it is slightly cold, but comfortable with everyone in your family, so you can beat the crowd. Parking might be difficult, and there will be a LOT of walking, but it’s worth it. Make this an all day trip.

On the way back from the Zoo, consider driving past the embassies, down Massachusettes, NW. It’s pretty cool to see and another little thing to do while driving.

If your kids are older (and like shopping), go to Georgetown, where all the cool shops are. There are original and big chain shops, so a great variety of outfitters.

If you like art in your family, there are several galleries. Really, there are a lot. So you can narrow that down too (if you do like art, go to the National Gallery-its great AND free!)

For Food:

Zorba’s Cafe-incredible Greek food on 20th Street. (I have not been there, but my sister, mother and father have, and they really love it!)

Marrakesh-really fantastic Morrocan atmosphere and eating. It looks a little scary from the outside, but inside, it’s beautiful. I adore this place. Something to be aware of, pretty pricy, and a *7 course meal* (including tea and a little desert pastry) and all of the meals are the same. You eat out of one plate with towels on your laps. At one point, a belly dancer comes out, and pulls out 3 people usually to dance with her at a time. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you will get to see the illustrious owner, who has pictures on the walls (not of the dining main room) of the corridor to the restroom (and maybe kitchen) of him and numerous celebrities.

I know there is more, but I can’t remember now. BUT, if you want to go out of the city, then go to:

Jaipur- delicious Indian food and buffet. It is about 30-40 minutes (with traffic, 40). It’s a great place to go.

Reston Town Center in Reston, VA-about 30-40 also, but has great sushi place, Obi Sushi.

Even further (by a couple MORE minutes) is Herndon. For REALLY good indian food, go to Angeethi. I love this place!

If you feel like driving to Herndon one more time, for a little Mexian food place that has been here since ’75, you can go to The Tortilla Factory. It can’t hold a candle to Marrakesh, but it’s pretty good, definitely affordable, and lots of people in the area go there.

I hope this is helpful! Enjoy ur trip!
