Soulard Mardi Gras started as a private party in 1980, and has since grown into the largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States outside of New Orleans. The celebration begins on the Twelfth Night in January (which in 2010 will be January 6th) and lasts until Fat Tuesday (February 16). The estimated impact on the St. Louis economy is more than $21 million. The 2010 major events include the following:
January 6 – 12th Night
January 16 &17- Snowman Softball Tournament
January 23- U.S. Cellular Family Winter Carnival
January 23- Poker Run
January 29 – Toast of Soulard Wine Taste
January 30 – Crystal Cajun Cook-Off
February 6 & 7 – Southern Comfort Taste of Soulard
February 7 – Beggin’ Strips Barkus Pet Parade
February 7 – PetSmart Wiener Dog Derby
February 13 – Lumiere Place Grand Parade
February 13 – Bud Light Party Tent
February 13 – Rolling Rock Music Experience
February 13 – Gateway Harley Gras
February 16 – Lumiere Place Fat Tuesday Parade
Highlights of the Soulard Mardi Gras festival that you won’t want to miss include:
- The Toast of Soulard Wine Taste (January 29) will be held at two venues. Those who attend will be able to sample and purchase a variety of wines from both local and national wineries. There is plenty of food to sample (each attendee will receive 4 food sampling tickets) and there are several trolleys that will take you from one venue to the other.
- The Crystal Cajun Cook-Off (January 30) pits ten professional chefs and ten amateur chefs against each other in their respective categories for the best Cajun/Creole dish. Each attendee is again given four food tickets. There is live music, and unlimited samples of beer and soda. What’s more you can download your favorite recipes from the online cookbook, or purchase cookbooks from years before.
- The Lumière Place Grand Parade is one of the largest parades in the Midwest. With more than 100 units, and a parade route that runs from Busch Stadium to Soulard a distance of 70 square blocks. The Lumière Place Grand Parade is one of the most important events of the festival. Hundreds of thousands of spectators turn out to witness the parade, and get their beads from the float riders.
Mardi Gras, called Carnival in other parts of the world, is a spectacle and experience that should not be missed. If you are in the Midwest just before Lenten season, travel to St. Louis for one of the greatest parties you’ll ever attend.
