When I think of goal achievement and celebration, the picture that immediately comes to mind is the marathon runner crossing the finish line after a grueling race. The crowd is cheering, the racer is exhausted, but exhilarated. Everyone is excited and happy.
Flash back several months, maybe years. The winner of the marathon is a new runner. He starts out with short runs, his lungs feel like they are on fire as he runs as fast as he can. His legs ache from being pushed to their max. He practices every day. He keeps pushing himself. As time passes, he gets faster and faster, he can run farther and farther. What made him push through the discomfort? What made him persist until he reached his goal.
The secret lies in the small goals and the small victories. He knew that one day he wanted to run the marathon. That was his overall goal, but to get to that goal, he set small, measurable, attainable goals. His first goal may have been to run a mile. Then he tried to run the same mile, but increase his speed. As he accomplished each goal, he celebrated that victory. There are six top reasons to celebrate the small victories on our way to our larger goal. These reasons are:
1. Clarity
Setting small, measurable attainable goals gives us clarity of focus. We have a measurable reason to celebrate.
2. Motivation to Continue
Celebrating the small successes gives us motivation to continue to the next small goal we have set. This motivation comes from our sense of accomplishment at completing the small goal.
3. Encouragement and support from others
Share your success with your support group. Allow friends and co-workers to praise and encourage you. This increases your desire to push on toward the next goal.
4. Increased Creative Energy
When we are celebrating and feel good about our accomplishments, it frees up the creative thought within and allows us to think of solutions and ideas that would not even dare to enter a critical mind.
5. Quicker Results
The clarity of focus, motivation to continue, and the increased creative energy all combine to give us more productive and quicker results. An opportunity to celebrate the accomplishment of our end goal.
6. What We Focus On Expands
Success breeds success. Celebration of our small victories leads to the accomplishment of greater victories and greater achievements. Find a reason to celebrate your success everyday and you will soon find yourself accomplishing more than you can currently dream possible.
