How could I find a publisher for my Great-Grandfather’s book of poetry?
Okay, there are a few hurdles in this project. First of all, while he did get nearly all his worked accepted in newspapers in Ireland and Australia during his lifetime, no one has ever printed an actual volume of his work, and so he doesn’t any rep’ to motivate publishers to produce one. Beyond that, well, the topics of his poems–largely celebrations of the Irish and Australian people and various protests over the monarchy–are perhaps a little dated. Any suggestions? And no, a vanity press does not constitute a solution.
The fact that he had most of his work already published will make things a little easier, as it shows his work was at least good enough for publication. Where he was published can be a plus or a minus, depending on the publisher. The first thing I’d suggest is to get a current copy of Poets Market and look for publishers that look for this kind of collections. There are thousands of publishers listed, along with submission requirements, point of contacts, etc. You are correct in assuming that getting a collection of poetry published is a bit trickier than a single poem, but it all depends on how it’s put out there and to whom you’ve submitted the collection of poems. The other suggestion would be to find a publisher in Ireland or Australia who publishes poetry “about” each locale. Poets Market probably won’t be able to help you there and you’ll have to find its equivalent in those areas, or simply google “publishers” for specific locations. You can also contact local papers and ask them for suggestions…you can write directly to the editor. Being “dated” is not as much a problem as being “marketable”. If you find the right venue, I’m sure you’ll find a publisher. You can also try a bookstore where you can find a book similar to the one you want to publish and contact that publisher directly. Even if you don’t write to any of the publishers in Poets Market, you’d benefit by getting a copy as it tells how to contact editors and publishers, what format to submit the work, how to present it, etc. Very, very valuable information because editors and publishers receive hundreds of submissions and those who don’t look serious, don’t get taken seriously. Do your homework first, then make each submission count…and have patience.
