A turkey carcass, cold mashed potatoes,
Stone cold rolls, stewed tomatoes.
Porcelain plates heaped high with corn,
The symbols of a day to mourn.
A day of mistrust, unkindness true,
Washing over us like morning dew.
A day to spread death, sickness and bad health,
Take advantage of the unknown, disgrace the common wealth.
Give thanks to those that couldn’t stand,
To see culture and individuality brought to this land.
A peaceful nation, its easy to see,
That kindness does not spread from sea to sea.
We passed on cider and cranberry sauce,
Generosity and pain not at a loss.
America’s first holiday is not a holiday at all,
A celebration, if only, marking black Friday at the mall.
What began as a friendship ends in deterioration,
Of peace and liberty in our great nation.
So watch some football, and overload on pie,
And celebrate as we watch freedom die.
Unclear of your stance-are you against Thanksgiving from the historical beginning or what its interpretation has presently become? And, I wouldn’t open with a turkey “carcass”-big turn-off right away. Too crass when the rest of your poem has a more introspective turn. Otherwise, creative and well-versed.
