The origins of Valentine’s Day are not known for sure. One of the most accepted, is that it originated from St. Valentine, the Roman who was earlier jailed and then martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., after which the day became a symbol for lovers’ celebrations. Another more romantic tale says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine”. And ever since, romantic lovers have been sending love messages on 14th February – coined Valentine’s Day.
Gradually, St. Valentine became the guardian saint of lovers and February 14 became the day for exchanging love messages around the world.
