methodists? please answer my questions?
so i have to do a project on how you do your Eucharistic Celebrations.
and i have some questions.
What are your rules for participation?
How often is Eucharist celebrated?
What is the meaning of the Eucharist?
and then i have some other information which could you please tell me if its correct?
Methodists believe in real presence.
Anyone can partake in Methodist Eucharist. They practice open communion which means the person does not need to be a baptized Methodist to take communion.
Most Methodist Churches use grape juice for wine leavened yeast bread.
Most of the time the wine is served in separate cups for everyone, but now they are beginning to use a communal cup more.
You’ll find many different ways of approaching the Eucharist (or communion, or the Lord’s Supper) in Methodist churches. To start off with your questions, though:
1) Most practice open communion. If you can come to the “table” with your heart in the right place, then you are welcome. There aren’t people there to check on you; it’s an issue between you and God.
2) Again most Methodists celebrate on the first Sunday of the month. I do know of some that have a weekly communion service, however. And on the other end of the spectrum, there may be some that rarely celebrate it at all.
3) By taking the Eucharist, we enter into the story of the Christian faith. It is an act of obedience and remembrance. Obedience to the command that Christ laid before the disciples, and remembrance of the story of the Christian faith.
Now, for the other stuff.
a) Methodists do not believe in the actual presence of the body and blood of Christ, as the Roman Catholic church does (RCC belief is known as transubstantiation). Methodist recognize the spiritual presence and the symbolism of the bread and juice, which falls more in line with a Zwinglian understanding of the Eucharist.
b) You do not have to be a Methodist to take communion.
c) Most Methodist church do use grape juice; the bread varies from church to church. Some will use wafers, others crackers, others loaves of bread, and still others will use unleavened bread
d) Again, it depends on the church you go to. Some will have a communal cup and dip the bread in that cup (called intinction), others will have individual cups.
Hope that helps!
