What’s the “Celebration, Florida” joke in Avenue Q?
Before the slutty puppet sings her song, Brian says she can be seen in Amsterdam, Bangkok, and Celebration, Florida. I get the first two, but isn’t Celebration that Disney Community?
Is he just putting an innocent one in there to be funny? Or is he suggesting the town isn’t that innocent?
I guess I don’t get it.
Celebration was set up to be the most white bread, family-oriented, Middle America town imaginable. They have rules about what color you can paint your house, what kind of grass you can plant, and everything else.
So the joke is that the ultimate strait-laced town is one of her stops, along with two of the most wide-open places in the world. You’re expecting him to say “Las Vegas” or “Tiajuana”, but he says “Celebration.” That’s what’s funny about it.
