Trying to organise someone’s 40th is something that needs time and care spent on it, and it was with this in mind that I started planning for my mates approaching mid life crisis. I went down the route of going abroad to the Grats Music Festival or booking up for an adventure safari holiday gorilla tracking but, I then found that Bernie hates to fly so looked a little closer to home. With most of the clan working in the Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire area I wanted to find a good central spot where people could easily get to local events to make it a weekend worth remembering.

This is the first point I want to make. If You are planning an event try to make it as accessible as possible to all of the people that you are inviting along to it, this ensures that attendance will remain high and makes the trip home less of a chore for all concerned. Its also of utmost importance to ensure that the people you are inviting don’t have any phobias that you cant work around.

There are some great outdoor events that you can go to, spread out over these areas. I wanted Bernie to feel like turning 40 was a start to life not a dawning of mortality. I wanted the first day to be a thrill of a life time so booked 12 of us in to do an assisted skydive over the Salisbury plains (I know he hates flying but sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind). At this point I hadn’t found a base to travel out from but after I searched for hotel hire Salisbury, I found a fantastic Hotel in Wilton that allowed you to book all of its rooms and facilities for the whole weekend Friday to Sunday. They offered a large breakfast and evening meals which was ideal for what we were doing. Friday night was to be a gentle stroll round the ale houses of Salisbury partaking of one or two of their fine beverages before going for a dance at the local nightclubs.

This is my second point when you find a place to stay ensure that it offers you something that enhances you experience, and links in with all of the activities you are trying to fit in during your stay.

Thirdly make sure you check out all of the transport issues long in advance of getting there if people are drinking alcohol you have to make sure there is a good taxi service or bus service to get you from pillar to post.

The second day I booked us in for the morning at a paint ball site for some entertaining and slightly painful shoot the Bernie and capture the flag type action. I booked the afternoon up at Thruxton race course, where we would all have some basic tuition before being let loose to race around the circuit in our different super cars trying to beat each others times. This would be followed by a trip back to our Salisbury hotel for a slap up meal and a night in front of the fire with wine and music provided by a local folk band that would just add to the ambiance. Obviously now that Bernie is getting on a bit I didn’t want to completely tire him out before the end of the weekend so booked the Sunday for us to go horse riding along the Droves that lace their way through the countryside of Dorset and Wiltshire. I wanted to finish up back at the hotel for a final round of champagne before being carted off to all and sundries home by the local taxi firm. Ill let you know how it went.

Fourth bit of advice is to ensure that you fit in some form of less active activity, this ensures that people don’t get overtired and grouchy and also gives everyone time to really enjoy all of the activities.

What I am basically trying to say is that when you try to organise a holiday look around you, check the local papers, check the local directories and check online for local search phrases that bring up information that can make the difference between an amazing day and just another ordinary day. Searching in your area you will be amazed at how many interesting events and activities you can find each area offering up its particular brand of experience.

Hotel hire Salisbury was the route I took to make sure my friends 40th was the best it could be, the Salisbury hotel was a fantastic base to work out from.
