Paulo Nutini….. your opinions please?

I recently saw the traditional BBC Scotland “Hogmanay” show and was very surprised – pleasantly so- by the inclusion of this young guy “Paulo Nutini” who I must say, has an unusual approach.

His rendition of “Auld lang syne” was very much in the tradition of Glesca drunk singing. yet he is obviously talented, and I was surprised when his mummy said he was only 19. He is obviously talented but what is his normal musical genre? Does he write his own material?

I must say he provided a change from the usual “Aly Bain and Phil cunningham” fare which- with no disrespect to these two great musicians – sounded like it had dead lice dropping off it, in comparison.

Is this young gentleman the future of Scottish music? I sort of hope he is!
I mean no disrespect to Aly and Phil but the coy looks they give each other while they are playing, is starting to get on my nerves as the years go by!

He actually surprised the hell out of me. Up until a few weeks ago I’d only heard him on the radio, and so the only image I had of him was the one that I’d pieced together from the sound of his voice. Basically I had him down as a mid thirties been-there-done-that on forty fags a day soul singer. I saw a video of his on TV a few weeks back, and my god did I get a shock! He has an incredible talent, and an awesome voice. As for him being the future of Scottish music, let’s just say that The Proclaimers should hang up their guitars for a while and let young Paolo have a turn :o )
